How to Avoid a Wedding Bartending Scam: What Every Couple Should Ask Before Booking a Mobile Bar

How to Avoid a Wedding Bartending Scam: What Every Couple Should Ask Before Booking a Mobile Bar

By Courtney, Founder of Chesapeake Bartenders and Events

If you follow wedding news, you may have seen the story out of Michigan this week. Dozens of brides say a mobile bartending company called Sip of Eden did not deliver the service they paid for, and that the company refused to issue refunds. Couples say the company canceled on them, often with explanations like a family death or a car accident. Some reports put the number of affected couples near 100, and several couples have filed complaints with the Michigan Attorney General’s office. Stories like this are heartbreaking. Your wedding bar is not a small detail. It is the heart of your reception, and when it falls apart, your guests notice immediately.

I have worked in hospitality since I was fifteen and have bartended since I was twenty one, including years behind the bar at Mastro’s Ocean Club in Scottsdale and Armadillo’s in downtown Annapolis. I spent nearly two decades working one of the earliest mobile bar companies in the region before founding Chesapeake Bartenders and Events in 2019. We have since executed more than 170 weddings. I want to share what I tell couples about vetting a mobile bar company, because we are in an era where anybody can set up a business, and the difference between a legitimate company and a risky one is not always obvious from a flyer.

Red Flag One: A Price That Is Too Good to Be True

One of the biggest red flags is a price point like $750 for a wedding. Legitimate wedding bar companies charge far more than that, because the cost of insurance and product alone will exceed $750 a wedding. That price is not sustainable.

A company pricing that low may be doing so because they know they cannot compete with legitimate businesses. When a price seems unbelievable, ask yourself what is being left out. Is it insurance? Licensing? Trained staff? Quite often, it is all three.

Red Flag Two: No Current Proof of Insurance

The easiest way to know if a mobile bar company is legitimate is to ask for their current insurance. A serious wedding bar company carries extensive coverage, and the more insurance they have, the better. If they cannot produce it, they are probably not serious about their business.

Here is what a professional bar company should be able to show you:

  • General liability insurance, which protects your venue and guests if something goes wrong on site
  • Liquor liability insurance, which covers the risks that come specifically with serving alcohol
  • Excess or umbrella coverage, which many venues and buildings require on top of standard limits
  • Workers’ compensation, which matters because it tells you the company has real employees

Ask for a current certificate of insurance, not a screenshot or a promise. A legitimate company can also name your venue as an additional insured, which many venues require. At CBE, we do this at no charge with two weeks of notice.

Red Flag Three: No Licensing or Food Safety Credentials

Many couples do not realize that a mobile bar is a food service business. In Maryland, we are required to hold a food service establishment license. That license covers serving ice, limes and citrus, and pouring liquid, because all of that is considered food.

If a company does not hold the proper license, they might be prepping everything in their home, which is not sanitary. They might not be using gloves, and items might not be temperature controlled. This is really, really important, because your guests are consuming what that company prepares.

Beyond licensing, ask about certifications. Bartenders should hold alcohol server certification such as TIPS, which trains them to check identification and recognize and prevent overservice. A manager with ServSafe certification is another strong sign that food safety is taken seriously.

Red Flag Four: A One Person Operation With No Team

Ask whether the company has employees. If they have employees, they are legitimate. A company with a real team has payroll, workers’ compensation, and systems in place, which means someone shows up even if one person gets sick.

A single person hitting you up in a Facebook group has no backup plan. If they cancel, you are left scrambling days before your wedding.

Why Where You Search Matters

This is one of the reasons I recommend using Google and AI search tools to find your wedding vendors, rather than relying on social media posts alone. In the Michigan story, one Ohio bride said she found the company through a Facebook group for Ohio wedding vendors, according to yahoo

If you are going off a Facebook group post and an AI flyer, you have no idea whether that company is actually following local law. Google and AI search surface companies with established websites, verified business profiles, and a history of reviews over time. That footprint is much harder to fake than a single post.

When you read reviews, look for volume and consistency across several years, not a handful of glowing reviews posted in the same week. Look for reviews that mention bartenders by name and describe specific events.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

Before you sign with any mobile bar company, ask the hard questions:

  • Can you send a current certificate of insurance, and can you name my venue as an additional insured?
  • Do you carry liquor liability coverage?
  • What licenses do you hold in the state where my wedding is taking place?
  • Are your bartenders certified in responsible alcohol service?
  • Do you have employees, or will you be subcontracting my event?
  • What happens if my assigned bartender cannot make it?
  • Which planners and venues have you worked with, and can I see reviews from past couples?
  • Is the contract signed by both parties, with clear payment terms and a cancellation policy?

A legitimate company will welcome these questions. If a vendor becomes evasive or pressures you to pay quickly through an app, take that as your answer.

If a Full Service Bar Is Not in Your Budget

Not every couple has the budget for a luxury bar service, and that is completely fine. A cheap, unlicensed bartender is not the right answer, though. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a wedding bartending service cost?
Pricing varies by guest count, service length, and region. A legitimate, fully insured wedding bar company will charge well above a few hundred dollars, because insurance and product alone exceed that amount. At CBE, weddings start at $7,000 for up to 75 guests.

What insurance should a mobile bartender have?
Ask for general liability, liquor liability, and workers’ compensation at minimum. Many venues also require excess or umbrella coverage and ask to be named as an additional insured.

Is it safe to hire a bartender from a Facebook group?
It can be difficult to verify licensing, insurance, and history from a social media post alone. Use Google and AI search to confirm that the company has an established business profile, a consistent review history, and current insurance before you pay a deposit.
